Northwestern University provides some transport services for medically ill students who need to travel between their residence hall/apartment (within the City of Evanston only), the Health Service (Searle Hall), and/or Evanston Hospital . The service is only to be used for transport of medically ill students to and from medical facilities in serious or urgent situations; its use for other purposes may result in a variety of sanctions including, but not limited to, UHAS proceedings. Students needing transportation to and from Evanston Hospital or the associated physician's offices for routine medical care (physician's appointments, CT/MRI scans, etc.) should use the NU Shuttle System, rather than the transport services described in this policy. Both the Intercampus Shuttle and the Ryan Field Shuttle make stops at the El Station on Central Avenue.
Any student requiring emergency medical transport for a serious or potentially lethal condition should be transported by ambulance. Use of other means of transport (e.g., fellow students, Best Taxi, SafeRide) is not appropriate in these circumstances. For less-than-emergent situations, transportation by Best Taxi will be the usual mechanism at all times of the day or night as well as throughout the year. No pre-authorization is required for use of Best Taxi for medical transport services. Best Taxi may be contacted at 847 864-2500. However, Northwestern students must present a valid Wildcard to the Best Taxi driver at the time of pick-up. All charges generated by Best Taxi will be paid by the University Health Service.
A student being transported from Evanston Hospital/Emergency Room may request that a stop be made at a local pharmacy in order to fill necessary prescriptions. In addition, a student utilizing Best Taxi for medical transport may request that one or more friends accompany him/her.
Questions about this policy may be directed to the office of the Health Service Executive Director: (847) 491-2123.
