Q) I have a prescription from a pharmacy outside the Health
Service. How do I get it transferred?
A) The NUHS Pharmacy does not call outside pharmacies to transfer prescriptions out but we do call to transfer prescriptions to be filled here.
You have two options -- you may call your doctor and ask
him/her to fax us a written prescription with their DEA
number printed legibly. Our fax number is 847 467-6869 and
is accessible from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time, Monday
through Friday, during the regular academic year. Your faxed
prescription must be signed by a physician. You can also
bring in your container and see a doctor on staff to discuss
re-writing the prescription. Please be aware that the doctor
here may request additional information and he/she will
want to discuss your condition with you. This is done for
your protection and for ours. It is also important to note
that no doctor on staff will write more than a one month
extension of a prescription for birth control pills without
a written copy of your most recent women's health exam.
Q) What affect do antibiotics have on my oral contraceptives?
A) Certain antibiotics, including (but not limited to)
penicillin V, tetracycline and sulfa drugs can decrease
the effectiveness of oral contraceptives by 1-3%. Another
method of protection should be used for the cycle during
which antibiotics are taken.
Q) How much difference is there in price between the Health
Service and outside pharmacies?
A) Overall, the prices at the NU Health Service Pharmacy
are competitive. We offer special prices on some items because
we only service the Northwestern Community. In addition,
we do not charge sales tax. Please note that you are required
to always show a valid ID from either Northwestern University,
Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary or Seabury-Western
Theological Seminary whenever you use the Pharmacy.
Q) What should I do when the pharmacy is closed?
A) It depends on the situation. If you are ill and at the
Health Service, provisions will be made to get you your
medication. If you are out of medicine and it is a break
between quarters (when the pharmacy is closed for a week
or more) you should talk to a doctor on staff about calling
a prescription into an outside pharmacy.
Q) Can my doctor call in a prescription?
A) We accept phone-in prescriptions during regular business
hours, and your doctor is welcome to fax prescriptions to
the Health Service at 847 467-6869. Faxed prescriptions
must be signed by a physician. If your doctor would like
to speak to a doctor on staff, he/she should call 847 491-8100.
Q) How do I get my prescription transferred to an outside
pharmacy?
A) You should go to the pharmacy you would like to fill
your prescription at and they will call us for a transfer.
Remember, however, that once a prescription is transferred
outside, you cannot switch it back to the Health Service.
You will need a written prescription to fill it here. Once
a transfer has occurred, the prescription becomes the property
of the outside pharmacy and is expunged from our records.
Q) What about my prescription card?
A) We do not accept prescription plans at the Health Service.
We do, however, provide you with a full receipt you can
use to get reimbursed by your insurance company. In many
instances, our prices are lower than the standard co-pay.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call 847
491-2144 for a price quote.
Q) Can a friend pick up my prescription?
A) This is possible only if you send him/her with your
student ID card (WildCARD) and a written note with your
signature and date authorizing release of the prescription
to your friend. In addition, your friend must present their
own picture ID at the time of pick-up.
Q) What if I don't have enough money with me?
A) We accept cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, American Express,
WildCARD and other ATM/debit cards. If you don't have any
method of payment, you can bill your student account provided
you are a Northwestern student and you have your ID (WildCARD)
with you. The charge will appear under "drugs"
on your tuition bill. We do not disclose what the drugs
are to anyone except with your written permission.
Q) Do you carry non-prescription, over-the counter (OTC)
medications?
A) Yes. We encourage you to look check out our list of
nonprescription (OTC) items or call us at 847 491-2144 to
see if we carry what you want.
