Travel Health Services

For those students eligible to use the Health Service, the information that follows provides answers to frequently asked questions about health issues as related to international travel.

Who may use travel health services?

All NU eligible students may access travel health services at NU Health Service providing the international travel is solely for academic purposes to destinations not requiring Yellow Fever vaccine.

Travel for university-related purposes only may apply for consideration with the following documentation:

  • Purpose of travel
  • Travel itinerary
  • Dates of travel
  • Group members approved for NU-sponsored travel
  • Contact name, email, telephone number
  • NU-sponsored contact for this trip

Please submit this documentation to the NUHS Travel nurse via fax at 847.491.5919 or email to NUHS-Travel@northwestern.edu.

What travel health services are provided?

The practitioners of Northwestern University Health Service are well prepared to address your questions about health concerns when traveling abroad and can coordinate the provision of whatever immunizations or medications needed to travel safely.

Individual consultations with Health Service practitioners are available to determine recommended vaccines, to discuss general travel health issues and to receive vaccines.

What are the costs involved?

The student is charged for the specific immunizations or drugs required. Please note that the NU Student Health Insurance Plan does not cover travel immunization costs.

When should I get my travel immunizations?

Your travel health visit to assess the need for various immunizations and medications should occur at least eight weeks prior to your departure. Recommendations for vaccines and/or medications will vary from person to person according to pre-existing health conditions, previous travel history, and specific travel plans. Once a trip has been approved for travel consultation at NUHS, the Travel Nurse will contact approved participants about scheduling an appointment. This may take three to four weeks. Travel consultation appointments are limited. The Health Service cannot accommodate all interested travelers but will provide a list of local providers who specialize in this service.

Are there other resources or information that may be helpful?

You are strongly advised to fully explore all of the resources concerning travelers health provided by the Centers for Disease Control and the Travel Warnings and Consular Information Sheets from the U.S. State Department. These Web sites provide health information for international travel and discuss general recommendations for different geographic areas of the world and a summary of current disease outbreaks. You may also find useful travel health information at the Web site for the Medical College of Wisconsin. If you will be scheduling a travel appointment at the Health Service, please review these sites carefully before your appointment.
